SUMMER ASSOCIATES

Our summer associate program is one of the best in Utah and provides a truly unique and outstanding summer work experience. We make the unusual effort to give our summer associates “real world” experience by actively seeking opportunities for them to attend trials, hearings, depositions, and closings of complex transactions. We also involve summer associates with major cases and even, when appropriate, in client interaction. In addition, our summer associates work directly with as many shareholders as possible, including the most senior, experienced attorneys.

We always have two attorneys act as summer associate coordinators (one associate and one shareholder). They manage the workload and ensure our summer associates receive meaningful assignments as well as helpful training, feedback, and evaluations of their work.

We do these things because our summer program is the principal source of hiring new attorneys for the firm. Thus, we look for intelligent, motivated, and well-rounded individuals who will hopefully bring immediate impact and added depth to our firm. We typically hire two summer associates per year with the expectations that both will return as full time associates upon graduation and that both will one day be shareholders helping run our firm.

This front-end commitment, coupled with our culture of flexibility and recognition that attorneys have lives outside the law, has kept our turnover rate low. Many of our attorneys have been with the firm for decades. Because our firm recognizes the value of balanced lives, our annual billing requirement of 1850 billable hours for associates is concrete and accurately reflects our expectations. In addition, our highly competitive salary and benefits package ensures that our firm always attracts and retains the top candidates in the market.

Although we have no set criteria, we generally give preference to candidates who have real world work experience, who are in the top 25% of their law school class, who have, or will have, law review, journal, or moot court experience, and who have proven legal writing skills. While we often hire summer associates from the law schools within Utah, we also make a concerted effort to hire from other outstanding institutions throughout the country, as reflected in our firm profile.
